Sometime around the age of 6 or 7, I held the notion that what I wanted to be when I grew up was a Naturalist. What this idea promised my young self was that I would spend my days out in the woods, by creeks, or on beaches examining whatever bits of nature caught my interest, looking very closely at these small versions of what the world is.
Drawing in a tiny notebook jammed into my back pocket figured heavily in these excursions. It was (and is) a delightful pursuit
I didn’t become a Naturalist, but some kernel of that intention has been a thread weaving through my life. I examine patterns, look for clues as to what shapes the world takes, outside and inside myself. I do my best to translate what I see and understand into visual and physical language, in many different media
I feel so lucky to have carried this work with me all these years.
I cannot imagine living some other way.
